CHI St. Alexius Health and Sanford Health Bismarck joined forces to build and operate this facility. We have a highly-skilled radiation therapy team of oncology nurses, radiation therapists, a medical physicist and dosimetrists working with your radiation oncologist to care for you during your treatment. Our compassionate staff is trained to care for you with the same state-of-the art equipment often found in larger metropolitan areas.

New High Dose (HDR) Prostate Brachytherapy

New (HDR) Prostate Brachytherapy is a type of minimally invasive local treatment, similar to prostate seed implantation, which can be used for men with low risk, intermediate risk, or high risk prostate cancer. In contrast to seed implantation, HDR brachytherapy allows for up-front dose planning optimization prior to dose deposition and enables our doctors to more precisely minimize dose to the urethra and rectum while optimizing dose deposition to the prostate. This technique also avoids residual radioactive materials in patients, and thus prevents radiation exposure to family members, pets, and the public.

Logistically, the procedure is a same-day, outpatient procedure with light anesthesia. Treatment involves the placement of catheters into the prostate gland using ultrasound guidance. Advanced treatment planning is then undertaken to individualize treatment parameters based on patient anatomy. Finally, a radioactive source travels through the catheters to deliver radiotherapy over the course of 15-20 minutes. This technique provides precise, high-dose treatment over a short time interval and with minimal side effects. We are confident this new treatment option will be instrumental in improving the way we treat prostate cancer, and will lead to better patient outcomes.

Vision RT Technology

The Bismarck Cancer Center has recently added Vision RT Technology. An advancement that tracks a patient's position both before and during radiation therapy to help with treatment setup and accuracy. Vision RT uses infrared lasers to monitor patient position and movement and will signal for the radiation treatment to pause if the patient moves out of the desired position. This new technology is effective, for example, if the patient coughs or sneezes on the treatment table and will help protect surrounding healthy tissue from being exposed to radiation.  In addition, we use Deep Inspiration Breath Hold (DIBH), to move the heart away from the breast during therapy. DIBH will allow for reduced radiation dose to the heart.

External Beam Radiation Therapy involves directing a beam of radiation from outside the body to a specific cancerous organ or tissue inside the body.  This radiation therapy uses a linear accelerator, a high energy x-ray machine, to direct the radiation to the tumor.
