Patti's Inspiring Story
“When I was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2006, I was shocked. I kept thinking that it just couldn’t be. I was only 40. People die from cancer.
I had a hard time processing this diagnosis. After many days of crying, and focusing on a negative outcome, I had a turning point. I stood there in the middle of my living room and said, ‘I am not going to live like this.’ It was mind-over-matter; I wasn’t going to let cancer take me down.
I just took my treatment one day at a time. I have a wonderful family and great friends that were there with me each and every day – to pick me up on the days I wasn’t feeling so well, and to celebrate the days when I had passed a milestone. I was thankful for each new day that I could continue to be a wife and a mom.
At Bismarck Cancer Center, they are so good with all of their patients. My treatment was very special because my husband works there and I have a personal connection with the staff. We had such an emotional bond; we laughed and cried together, and that makes treatment a whole lot easier, knowing someone is always rooting for you.”
